I had often occasion to notice the use that was made of fragments and small opportunities in Cranford… Things that many would despise, and actions which it seemed scarcely worthwhile to perform, were all attended to…
—Elizabeth Gaskell—
Our lives are full of “fragments and small opportunities.” Bouquets of wild grasses, shells and pebbles from the shore, a half-hour visit to a convalescent home, small acts of kindness, found poems-anything that enriches the moment, for ourselves or for another, is worth performing. And it’s the busiest people who seem to have time for these fragments, time to smell the flowers. It’s often a shock to realize that doing something nice for ourselves might involve a small deliberate kindness to another. But the more we are good to ourselves in this way, the richer our lives become.
The moment is mine to cherish and to share. When I share a kindness, I double it.
