The art of pleasing consists in being pleased.—William Hazlitt…
Others’ pleasure in our company becomes our pleasure. If we can set aside our self-conscious anxieties and simply enjoy being with others, they will enjoy us. As lovers know, there is no aphrodisiac like a loved one’s desire. When we give one another our full attention, we enhance one another’s humanity. Much of life consists of routine transactions, in which people hardly recognize each other as human. Even intimate relationships can come to suffer if we withhold ourselves. When we discover pleasure in each other’s company, we kindle a spark of joy that illuminates far more than the moment. Today I will decide to be fully human in all my encounters.
